THE WRONG ONE

He loved her. He adored her to the point of allowing himself to become her puppet and she knew it. She used him for the money, for sex, and because she recognized that the she had him on a short leash.
“Why do you do this to me, Ivy?” Oscar barely uttered while choked up. He didn’t want to show her his weakness. Yet, she knew that he was crying for her and she kept packing.
“You and I both know we aren’t meant for each other,” she snapped back at him.
Any time she wanted him, one failed relationship after another, he took her in because he considered her his best friend. After all, she wouldn’t give him her heart. Ivy walks out the door without notice of when she would return.
Oscar falls back onto his bed wondering what in the world he did wrong. How he could get her back. After hours of thinking, he realized that he had tried everything in his power to be with her and she just wasn't ready for his love.
Ivy had him as a last resort. She knew that she’d probably come back to him if she couldn’t be with the other men in her life. The guys that disrespect her, smack her around, talked to her any way they pleased, who promise her sweet nothings and delivered just that, nothing.
She returned to Oscar, not once, not twice, but more than a dozen times and he took her as if he were treating her to the throne on each occasion. She loved it. She never really felt her heart break because he was the perfect rebound, but in her eyes, he didn’t have what the other men had. He didn’t have that umph that turned her on. So, after days, weeks or even months, she grew tired of him and went to look for another guy that fit her type.
For a period of nearly a year, Oscar didn’t hear from Ivy. She had disappeared like the wind and he began to adjust. He was a busy man who worked in the financial district of his town and had no time to date. However, he wanted to find a good girl. Someone who could make him feel like Ivy did or better. He tried something that he tried before but didn’t give it much attention. Winter was approaching and he was feeling a bit lonely. He wanted the cuddles of a real woman, a beautiful woman, the perfect woman in his eyes. Someone who would not abandon him like Ivy did time and time again.
Oscar jumps onto his laptop gives online dating a go. He sets a profile, loads a few pictures and signs in. A few weeks in, he notices that a few women like his profile, but he notices one in particular. She seems like an islander, Julia. He begins to chat with her. He looks at her profile and is jaw-dropped at the number of hobbies they have in common.
He is enthralled and ready to meet this lady. He finally has the chance to exchange contact information outside of the dating site. Julia finds him attractive and he finds her astonishing. They exchange messages for some time.
“I want to meet you, let’s meet.” Oscar does not hold back.
She is a bit taken aback by his sudden request. She knew that it would happen eventually, but she did not think it would be this fast. She feels a bit spontaneous and agrees. They consent to meet in a public place where everyone could see them and they would be away from harm. Just in case any of them were psychos. Oscar is floored by the results. He takes his keys and heads out with a cheesy smile on his face.
Julia, on the other hand, is excited but nervous. She does not know what to expect and keeps hoping he’s an amazing man that can sweep her off her feet someday.
They are both on the train. Oscar smiles to himself from time to time and Julia wonders if she should head back.
“What if he’s crazy,” her thoughts were messing with her head.
The only thing she was aware of was that her heart had a block of ice covering it. She was afraid to love again. She recognized her weaknesses and that was the way that the right guy would make her feel in order for that block to melt. At times, she felt tough enough to handle any situation, but at others she was ready to melt and make someone happy. Julia was well aware of how much of a sucker for love she has always been. She would never tell anyone unless she noticed they were in love with her first.
The station where they are both going to meet is approaching for Julia. She steps out of the train and walks toward the exit. Oscar notices her from a few feet away and Julia sees him too. They instantly smile at each other. They get something to eat and begin talking about a number of things. This is perfect for Oscar since he has been working on getting over Ivy.
They go to a restaurant and have some Italian food. He goes to the restroom and notices a text from Ivy. He stays in there a little longer trying to mend their situation.
He tells her, “I’m on a date and she seems like a very nice girl so don’t come and ruin things for me.”
Ivy yells into the phone, “She will never be as good as me. I’m the only one who can give it to you the way you like it.”
Ivy loved to control Oscar for one simple reason, because she could.
Oscar closes his eyes and holds the phone to his ear, weakened by her words.
“Don’t do this to me right now. You know how I feel about you.”
Ivy hangs up. Oscar attempts to call back a few times and the calls go straight to voicemail. He washes his face, pats it dry and walks out of the restroom. Oscar and Julia lock eyes and smile.
“Are you okay?” Julia seemed a bit concerned.
“I’m fine and you? He asked.
She nodded and they kept talking about themselves, their likes and dislikes.
After a few weeks, Oscar thought Julia was the one. Their conversations were always interesting and exciting to him. He wanted to see her all the time. Yet, Julia was a bit nervous. She felt something strange. She noticed this happened before with another person she dated.
Her former boyfriend, several years ago, was just as excited to be with her and wanted to move fast. Their relationship moved faster and faster. She finally gave in and they became a couple. Before he could realize how he felt about her, he noticed that he was racing at an astronomical rate. She had already adjusted to his pace and it seemed normal until one day, he broke up with her for reasons she could not understand.
Now, a similar situation was taking place with Oscar. Julia felt that he was shifting too quickly. Oscar also noticed. He cared and did not care at times. He just wanted to get over Ivy and the best way to do that was to start something new. So, his mind was already moving at a first year rate of a relationship. This was happening despite the fact that they had only dated for a few weeks. Again, Julia gave in because she loved Oscar’s demeanor. They got along so well and she decided she did not want to compare the two people she dated so she followed his pace. It felt so good and that ice was melting.
They finally started becoming intimate. He enjoyed her and she enjoyed him. They were opening up. Things were starting to get hot and steamy between them, but all Oscar could think about was Ivy.
“What if I get back with Ivy.” He was mind boggled.
One day, Julia noticed that Oscar was acting a bit strange. Distant. Nonetheless, he wouldn’t respond to it and acted like it was nothing. Julia could feel when things were wrong. No one needed to tell her anything. She just knew. Oscar tried to distract her by taking her out and having fun together, but she sensed every part of his presence. He shut himself like he never had while they began dating.
After Julia and Oscar parted ways that day, Ivy called Oscar. He picked up while on the train. “I’m still planning to see you for Valentine’s day. I miss you.” She told him with that voice that softened his soul for her. He was happy and sad at the same time.
He had to let go of her. He hated that he had to, but he just couldn’t deal with both of them.
He messaged Julia the next morning, telling her that they could not see each other anymore for the simple reason that he couldn’t deal with the distance between them. They lived two hours away from each other and although both of them always found ways to see each other, he told her that it was too much for him to handle.
Julia was dumbfounded at the idea. It made no sense. She never saw a problem with the distance especially when it was not the first time he nor she had long distance relationships. They were barely a short distance away compared to past relationships they both had.
Oscar quickly picked up the phone to call Ivy and tell her that he was ready for her return and how much he missed her. He was happy and so was Ivy.
Julia had an idea something was wrong and she knew that there was something more, but she let him go. She did not want to impose on his reasons. She couldn’t deal with another guy who hyped her feelings up. So, she moved on.
Ivy returned that weekend. Her and Oscar made sweet love to one another and he was in heaven. When Ivy made love to him, the condom broke. Oscar didn’t mind so much. The thought of him being the father of her child was electrifying. They began talking about their future plans. Ivy he gave him loving that he always wanted from her. He was finally happy, until one day. He caught a terrible cold. He needed medicine so he went to get checked and found out he only had two months to live.
Ivy had infected him with full-blown AIDS. He was always so careful with the new women in his life, but when he went back to the love of his life, he realized, he got the wrong one.
Oscar wakes up hyperventilating with a cold sweat covering his body. It was a terrible dream. He noticed a note on the pillow next to him.
I’m not coming back. I can’t do this anymore. You’re great, but you’re not my type of guy. We are just friends and you don’t do it to me. Take care Oscar.
-Ivy
“I’m sorry Julia.” This time Oscar was quite upset at losing that great woman who wanted to turn his life around.
