Would you ever imagine yourself fighting a disabled person? When you think of disability, what comes to mind? How do you feel? Pity? Sadness? Unfairness? It’s official and this is where you will see the bomb drop. A new documentary film, Doglegs, shows you another side to handicapped individuals that may shock you. This intense documentary produced and directed by Heath Cozens brings to light the extraordinary life of disabled individuals and their underground life as wrestlers. It all takes place in a special league.
Doglegs is also a wrestling league in Tokyo, Japan for the “super handicapped” and sound individuals, which has been around since 1991. In this feature, Heath Cozens sheds light on a few of the many disabled wrestlers who voluntarily participate in this ferocious sport. Wrestlers range from alcoholics to clinically depressed and even a critically stricken cerebral palsy individual. The wrestlers span from a series of disabilities and Cozen reveals them in this 90-minute feature.
People have preconceived notions about the ‘disabled’ and how those dealing with certain physical or mental differences should be treated. The question is, how do the ‘disabled’ feel about themselves? Do some countries tend to mentally and physically spoil them because they ‘look’ vulnerable in the eyes of the able-bodied?
The director begs to differ and kick handicap stereotypes in the rear end. As the Producer and Director, Heath Cozen, pointed out, Doglegs will leave the audience thinking about the following questions, “How the hell should I feel about this? What is a disability, and who gets to decide? What does it mean to live, love and be truly free?”
Doglegs is looking to raise $18,000.00 USD on Kickstarter for its completion and to get it rolling on a global scale. Take a moment to help this film reach its goal and rock the cinemas. Any monetary donations are greatly appreciated.
